Understanding MTCTE and TEC Approval
The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has made it mandatory for all telecom equipment to undergo testing and certification prior to sale or import into India. This framework is known as the Mandatory Testing and Certification of Telecom Equipment (MTCTE).
Why MTCTE Was Introduced
As telecom networks become the backbone of national infrastructure, ensuring the security, safety, and interoperability of network equipment is paramount. MTCTE aims to prevent substandard equipment from degrading network performance and to protect user safety.
Phases of Implementation
MTCTE is being rolled out in phases. Equipment like 2-wire telephones, modems, routers, IoT devices, and base station controllers have already been brought under mandatory certification. It is crucial for OEMs to stay updated on which phase their product falls into to avoid customs clearance issues.
Testing Requirements
Testing must be carried out in a designated Conformance Assessment Body (CAB) located in India. The tests generally cover:
- EMI/EMC safety
- IPv6 readiness
- Security requirements
- Technical/Interface requirements
Partnering with a regulatory consultant like Xevo Solutions ensures that your telecom products smoothly pass CAB testing and secure TEC approval without unnecessary operational delays.
